An Old Time Fiddling Tradition Lives on in the Musquodoboit Valley!

Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre is home to the Annual Kirk Logan Old Time Fiddling Contest. Each year, on the last Saturday of September, our historic old theatre in Middle Musquodoboit comes alive with fiddle music.

The Kirk Logan Old Time Fiddling Contest was named for Kirk Logan (1921-1997), champion fiddler who represented the Musquodoboit Valley at Old Time Fiddling Contests throughout Eastern Canada for over fifty years.

Born in Upper Musquodoboit on Aug. 16, 1921, and taught by his grandfather, Albert Logan, Kirk learned to play the fiddle at the age of 13. He played for his first dance in 1937 at the I.O.O.F. Hall in Middle Musquodoboit and this began a career of fiddling for dances that extended across six decades.

Kirk Logan

He played in his first fiddling contest in Dartmouth, in 1945. His home was in Centre Musquodoboit, but he would alway register himself as "Kirk Logan - Musquodoboit". He was a regular fiddler for several years during and after the War at Lloyd Creelman's dances at the South Branch Dance Hall, at Keir Murphy's Dance Hall in Moose River, and in Elderbank at the Innis & Keddy Recreation Hall. Kirk played with Elmer MacKinnon and "The Acadians" in the Truro area throughout the 1970s and '80s. In the 1980s and '90s he played regularly for dances at the Fellowship Hall in Upper Musquodoboit.

Kirk Logan was a three-time champion in the over-60 class at the Maritime Old-Time Fiddling Contest in Dartmouth, a four-time winner in the same class at the New Brunswick Fiddling Contest in Sackville, N.B., and a winner  twice in the over 60 class at the Down East Old Time Fiddling Contest in Lower Sackville, N.S.

Kirk took up teaching the fiddle when he was in his '70s, and in the last years of his life did much to pass on the tradition he had inherited to a new generation of musicians who have taken their own place on stage at the Bicentennial Theatre in recent years.

In 1996 Kirk Logan volunteered to assist the Board of Directors for the Bicentennial Theatre to organize their own Ol' Time Fiddling Contest. At that first contest it was announced that the contest henceforth would be named "The Kirk Logan Old Time Fiddling Contest."

Before his death, on July 13, 1997, Kirk released his only recording. Grandfather's Grandson: The Old-Time Fiddle of Musquodoboit's Kirk Logan, released in 1996, featured some of his original compositions, including "Rainy Reel" and the "Ox Bow Reel", demonstrating his mastery of the instrument.

The 15th Annual Kirk Logan Old time Fiddling Contest was held on September 25, 2010 at the Bicentennial Theatre, Middle Musquodoboit.  Special thanks to  MC, Jack Sibley; judges Skip Holmes and Krista Tousenard;  piano accompanist Kimberley Holmes; Brookvale Ladies Aid and volunteers Irene Benvie, Sandy MacPherson, Jessica Isnor and Rachel Sutherland.  A list of competitor standings is as follows:
